This amazing Border Collie who lives in Austria is able to recognize over 300 words and commands and has even been been tested for her ability to interpret images and use cognitive thinking to associate objects.

It is already common knowledge amongst dog owners and enthusiasts that the Border Collie is one of the most intelligent breeds and their abilities when used as working dogs for herding and agility is second to none. But the skills and understanding of Betsy go far beyond that of a normal dog and researchers have used her as the basis of their foundations and predictions that humans have only just scratched the surface of a dogs intelligence and their unique ability to understand what humans want before the thought has formed.

Scientists have already stated certain aspects of a canines intelligence that mimic that of a human and have not been cited in any other animal species; including our nearest counterpart, the ape. A dog is one of the only animals with the exception of humans who understand the action of pointing. Researchers carried out numerous tests and experiments which concluded that a dog understands the human action of pointing and will not only follow the gaze line of a point, but will also chose to investigate an object which has been pointed at over another.

Click here to view the embedded video.

This video shows how Betsy is able to chose a toy by name from many others and she boasts a vocabulary of over 300 words, but an even more amazing skill which is not shown in this video is Betsy’s ability to interpret and fetch a toy based on either an 2D image or a representation. For example, when Betsy is shown a picture of one of her toys, she is still bale to pick that toy out of a batch of hundreds and she is also able to look at a smaller scaled version of a toy and then retrieve the mirror larger version. This is proof that Betsy does not just have an a mazing memory for words, but it is actually cognitive logic that aids her amazing talent.

Two days ago, at the dog park, I could not help but laugh at my twelve and a half year old lab. Abby was delighted to see Toby, a very large white Shepard. In his presence she completely forgets she is a “senior” and becomes a pup again. The behaviour I see is always predictable when she fancies another dog.

Abby shows all the outward signs of being interested – going up close to the other dog’s face, tail up and wagging very fast, ears perked, and often does a play bow in front of her idol. Sometimes she exerts a high yip from her mouth, followed by moving her body spinning in circles to “show off” her youth and inviting a playful interaction. In brief episodes she will go up on her back legs and “box” the air or leap on Toby who is two and half times her size and encourage some all-star wrestling. When this happens I often think she is equal to Betty White, the spunky actress who never seems her age!

I thought it might be fun to create a Personal Ad that Abby would write regarding her “type” or dream date. I certainly have some idea after all these years! We had fun at our dinner table creating the following.

“I am a natural blonde bitch who is young at heart with beautiful brown eyes. I am seeking others who are early risers or foodies, those who love to swim and to go exploring on walks in all four seasons. They must enjoy laying in the sun on dreamy summer days and spending time with family. A love of fireworks, loud thunder, guitar music or vacuums need not apply as all those make me nervous. I especially like husky types, white shepherds, and senior labs of any colour. I am open to all dog types – pure or mixed breeds, if you are friendly and don’t come on too strong on our first date. I don’t have a lot of patience for young puppies with high energy levels at my age. I look forward to meeting you! Love, City Girl.”

I do wonder what makes a dog have a shining to another. It is amazing to watch at a dog park the dynamics. Certainly a lot is attributed to the pooches reading each other’s signals – like speed dating there can be an instant attraction!

I do think a large portion of chemistry is scent and we know how that gets checked out right off the bat! Then their body signals, and game on. It can be a shared love of a ball being tossed or a game of chase in action that draws in a dog. Others go for the familiarity of a canine buddy seen on a regular basis – those who take comfort in playtime without surprises. I have even witnessed many times a pack of only one colour dogs running/playing together. This cannot be a coincidence as there are many others at the off leash to draw from!

Maybe your dog’s type is another dog on your street or in your building if you live in an apartment or condo. You and the other owner are great friends so it makes it easy for the dogs to hang out and have fun. Just the sight of one another is exciting for them.

Sometimes family members have dogs that are “the right fit,” socially as companions. Memories are made at family reunions with dogs reconnecting or through time at a cottage. The holidays year round present other opportunities for our dogs to maybe play/visit with an old friend who might be a favourite.

Does your dog go for breeds similar to itself or for a polar opposite? Is there a definite similarity to the favourite type regarding fur, age, height, young or old? Perhaps dogs with the same kind of traits like another water-loving dog, stick chewer, runner/herder, squirrel/hunter, barker or level of sociability.

The beauty is, like their two-legged owners, dogs have countless “types” they like – big or small, fat or skinny, a lot of hair or very little hair, introverts or extroverts, active or inactive etc. Most importantly, however, dogs and humans have the ability to be loved and to give love back.

What would your dog’s ad say?

It is a non-profit organization dedicated to freeing chained dogs, and bringing man’s best friend into the home and family. The mission statement of Dogs Deserve Better is to free dogs through education, rescue and rehabilitation, grass-roots legislation and fencing programs.

The organisation advocates that chaining is not only inhumane for dogs, but has taken a severe toll on the USA’s children as well. In the period from October 2003 through today, there were at least 371 children killed or seriously injured by chained dogs across the country. The Dog Express’s article on unchaining dogs described the effects tethering can have on a dogs behaviour and mental state, including how territorial dogs will become of the small space in which they are confined and also become de-socialised and void of human contact and socialisation skills.

As with all non-profit organisations, Dogs Deserve Better are always in desperate need of volunteers and there are numerous ways that the general public can help. A few of the vacancies that always need volunteer help are:-

Administrative - Help with occasional clerical duties or special projects that can be done at home

Fundraisers - If you are a fundraiser, grant writer, special events planner, or development/major gifts officer, DDB would like you to consider using your contacts to raise funds for them

Vet Care and Advice - Vet care is expensive and dogs rescued from the chain often need a lot of it! De-worming, shots, neutering and spaying, micro-chipping and taking care of wounds received from being outside 24/7 are just some of the vet services that DDB need donated

Home Visits - DDB are always looking for volunteers to help with foster and adoption home visits and to screen applications

Phone Calls – DDB need people to make phone calls for various projects, such as special campaigns, legislative, media, corporate sponsors, donor “thank you’s”, etc

If you want to help by donating some cash, why not visit the Dogs Deserve Better online store where you can treat yourself to a range of DDB gifts and products.

Pet Food Stamps is an amazing non-profit organisation who have set up in the US to fill the gap in the current food stamp provisions. Pet food and supplies are not allowed to be purchased on general food stamps, which are given to families on a low-income to help subsidise and in some cases completely pay for the food and provision that they need.

How Do Food Stamps Help

Families who are on low incomes or who are going through difficult times financially, which given today’s economic climate is more and more likely; should not be excluded from owning or being able to keep their pet just because times are hard and allowing food stamps to be used for pet food and supplies is a fantastic idea which should be rolled out to many more countries.

Pet Food Stamps estimates that in excess of 50 million Americans currently receive general food stamps to help with daily living costs and a large portion of these people have dogs who they struggle to feed. Dogs are companions to so many people and to be forced to take your dog to an animal shelter should not happen to anyone if help can be sourced elsewhere.

As the Pet Food Stamps program continues to go from strength to strength, they propose to offer heavily discounted and even free veterinary care in addition to the wonderful work already carried out, further helping those who have become victims of high unemployment levels record home foreclosures and evictions.

How It Works

Once an application has been approved and a funding limit set, the staff at Pet Food Stamps transmit the order to Pet Flow who are the exclusive provider of food and supplies for the Pet Food Stamps Program. They offer over 200 brands of pet foods and supplies and even offer a free shipping service direct to the door.

Because there are thousands of applications to the program each week, it can take several weeks for an application to be processed, however this is a huge benefit for those people and families who already receive general food stamps or who are on or below the poverty line and are struggling to keep up with the furry friends expenses.

As any good dog owner will know, our dogs are sometimes treated to a little more luxury than their human counterparts in our families. The extra treat, lying on the bed, getting back on the sofa when you swore you wouldn’t let them! Those puppy dogs eyes are not just reserved for puppies and most if the time we are helpless and at the mercy of our four legged friends.

But there are some people who go above and beyond when it comes to luxury and some dogs have better accessories and lifestyles than some people. This article is about those luxury dog items that are just too over the top to be true.

No Ordinary Dogs Homes

Where does your dog sleep?

How about in a house as grand and chic as those in the Hollywood hills, adorned with celebrities. The Glam Limestone Dog House is the epitome of luxury and houses 2 leather, circular dog beds. This beautiful doggy pad may make your pooch grin from ear to ear, but the price tag will leave you not quite so joyful. For a mere $30,000 this luxury pad can be home to your dog.

Not got $30k to drop on a dog house? Well worry not, for a meagre $6,000 your dog can be resident in a Swiss Chalet Style House, complete with flowerpot dressing and wooden shutters. More of a country retreat than a Hollywood mansion, but still just as deluxe and welcoming. We simply love this big mountain dog sitting in front of his would be home….not quite sure how he fits through the door though?

Bling for the Dog

Not quite up for dropping a few thousand dollars for you dog to sleep in luxury? Then why not just add some sparkly bling to your mots loved companion. AristoPaws have am amazing range in luxury items that will still leave your purse-strings a little bit lighter, but not quite as much as the luxury homes.

The Swarovski Dog Collar is available in pink and black so both boys and girls can enjoy a bit of extra light when they wear this extravagant creation. The collar is Italian nappa leather and have four rows of studded Swarovski crystals. If you find the £225.00 price tag easy to swallow you could always shell out for a matching lead and have the perfect bling dog matching set.

One of my biggest ‘pet hates’, and I use the words literally, is dogs being tethered in gardens and left for hours on end. It is a common occurrence in many countries and I am always amazed at the amount of people who see nothing wrong with it. Quite frankly I struggle to see why someone would buy or re-home a dog only to tie them in the garden and leave them alone. Just don’t bother in the first place!

I know that some dogs live outside at night and have kennels and although this is not something I would do to my dogs, I do not argue with those who chose this option, providing the dog has company and exercise during the day and always has fresh water. Dogs are, after all, social animals and leaving them tethered to ropes or chains not only restricts their movements to a limited range, but it also increases the risk of the dog becoming aggressive with other dogs and people as they feel a loss of control at being restrained all of the time.

In addition to this, tethering the dog and leaving them for hours at a time is simply neglect. Leaving your dog for lengthy periods is never acceptable, but when that dog is left alone, outside and tethered it is an act of cruelty. The sad truth is that you hardly ever find a fluffy, cute puppy tethered in a garden and sitting on its own. But as the dog gets older and family members become bored, the dog can find itself cast out and without the company it so duly craves and needs. It is at times like this that a dog can develop behavioural issues such as depression and/or aggression and most of the time it follows that the dog ends up in a shelter with deep routed issues.

It is not always neglect and cruelty that cause a person to leave a dog outside or to tether them, sometimes it is down to ignorance and simply not understanding that dogs have social needs too. Also, tethering a dog may be done to prevent the dog escaping whilst they are in the garden, however the act of tethering can still have the same effect on the dogs personality.

If you tether your dog to prevent escape, then there are a number of options that may prevent the need to tether, such as having your dog spayed or neutered (which you should do anyway if the dog is escaping!) This means they are less likely to run when a female is in season. Try putting a tall fence or using plastic webbing around the bottom of the fence to prevent the dog jumping over or digging under.

If your dogs is overly boisterous in the house and so you tether them outside, try mental exercises such as agility or playing hide and seek with food; physical exercise is not always the solution for an energetic dog and being tethered in a garden is only going to make matters much worse.

You may spend a lot of time out of the house and so think it better to tether your dog outside than leave them in the house unable to go to the toilet, however dogs are not meant to be left alone for hours at a time. For a few pounds/dollars a day, you could employ a dog walker or even ask a trusted friend to take your dog out for 20-30 minutes. At least the dog gets out of the garden, has some proper exercise and has company for a period of time.

I understand that sometimes a situation changes and you feel you have no option such as having a dog who lives with you and them moving into a rented house or public owned property that does not allow dogs and I know it would be heartbreaking to give that dog up, but you have to think about what is best for the dog and spending all their time alone, tethered in a garden is not what man’s best friend is meant to be doing.

We have a duty of care to our animals and they deserve to be treated with the love and respect that they give us so unconditionally.

Three pairs of socks, check. Three shirts and two pairs of pants layered over long underwear, check. Winter boots (that I’m sure weigh five pounds apiece), check. Forget being fashionable in wind chills of -20 C; I have no illusions about that as I get ready to head out the door. A last check of my day’s most important items: My cell, my lifeline to dog owners day and night, and a set of keys that I am sure would overawe any school janitor. My backpack is already fully loaded with the essentials: bio-degradable poo bags to save the environment, four kinds of dog treats to cater to large and small pooches as well as those with allergy issues, a handful of Kleenex for those days when the wind causes perpetual nose drips, spare business cards for handing out to any potential clients I might meet along the way.

I am a dog walker. It’s a profession I discovered for myself almost nine years ago. I had dabbled in a few part-time jobs while raising our girls but really wanted something that was mine.

I love dogs, and love giving them (and me) exercise, but things are not always easy. Once, I remember taking a young Goldie-poo to the off-leash park after having been reassured by the owner that George would come back if called (always a worry for any walker). George did have great recall, but apparently not back across a shallow creek only fitfully covered with thin ice. I called and whistled, tried coaxing him sweetly, offered treats. He at last managed to dip a paw in the icy cold water before hastily drawing it back, looking at me as if to say, “Are you kidding?” I was left with no option but to go get him, wading through frigid water in hiking boots that immediately filled to capacity. Not a walk I remember fondly; nor the other one when I twisted my ankle badly going over a dip in the ground and hobbled back to my van thinking, “Why am I doing this?”

One of the least favourite situations for walkers in leash-free parks is seeing our little darlings roll around in raccoon poop, or eat poop, yuck! And no matter how hard I try not to, I manage to step in dog poo an average of four times a year. Murphy’s Law dictates that it’s always when I’m wearing shoes with deep, deep grooves.

I have been at this job long enough now to see my first dogs grow into seniors, and this year I cried along with their owners when told their lives were nearing the end or had ended. The loss hits me in two ways: I mourn for the dog who is no longer a part of my life, and also for the end of my relationship with the family. Yes, I do try to keep in touch, but the intimacy of being allowed into their homes and lives on a daily basis is suddenly cut off. Their lives become part of mine in a delicate dance.

I have been involved with families facing the death of a loved relative, critical illnesses, job losses, marriage break-ups, and moving away. Their joys are vicariously mine as well – beautiful home renovations, interesting new jobs, the excitement of child birth and adoption, the addition of a new puppy. I have often thought what I do is rather ministerial. People confide in me, ask advice, and seek friendship when lonely. It can be very fulfilling; I sense when to stay a few extra minutes to chat with an elderly senior, a depressed widow, or an anxious new Mom.

The icing on my cake is, however, the greeting I receive from every dog as I enter the home. The tail wagging, jumping, wiggling, smiling (I am not kidding) – dogs make the job such a pleasure. If only we could greet human loved ones with such enthusiasm whenever they come through the door!

I never know what can happen each day but I do savour the funny moments…. Picture a large white Sheppard running for the only puddle in a large field, then lying down in it and rising with an exact half of his body brown and the top half white. Everyone laughed, not only at the visual perfection but knowing the amount of clean-up it would entail.

At day’s end, my pedometer shows I have tracked over 40,000 feet. My mind boggles at the thought of multiplying this by 365 and then again by eleven years. All these walks, mostly pleasurable, many memorable. And all these friends, two- and four-legged, I’ve met all along the way.

How Important Dogs Are

Most dog owners do not need to be told how important their dogs are and how much unconditional love they get from their canine companion; but there are some dogs who are trained to go above and beyond the bond of friendship.

Service and healing dogs are not a new concept and with their unconditional love, loyalty and eagerness to please, dogs make the ideal companions for millions of people worldwide in areas such as home help for the disabled, daily aids for blind or deaf people and working with children with autism.

Effects of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Another area where dogs have had an amazing effect of helping their human counterparts is with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) syndrome in war veterans and it has even been said that healing dogs are better than drugs in treating this server condition. Over 300,000 war veterans in the US alone have returned from Afghanistan and Iraq suffering with PTSD, the effects of which can result in extreme depression, psychotic episodes or breakdowns, hallucinations, panic attacks, social anxiety, shaking, sweating and other physically and mentally draining symptoms.

How Dogs are Helping Our War Heroes

Healing dogs specially trained in helping veterans with PTSD are associated with a growing number of non-profit organisations across the world and great progress has been made when pairing veterans with dogs, which are mainly Labrador and Golden Retrievers but can be any breed with the correct training. A dogs natural ability to soothe those they are around is known to all dog lovers and owners, whether they need healing or not; but the other benefits a dog can have on the debilitating symptoms a PTSD sufferer experiences are just as fundamental and cathartic.

As war veterans develop a close bond with their healing dog, they learn to reconnect emotionally and physically through stroking, petting, hugs and just having the dog near. So many veterans are unable to cope with a social connection when they return from war and often this leads to a breakdown in family relationships.

A Dogs Unconditional Love

Whilst families want to offer unconditional love and help, it is a human condition to also think about our own needs and wants, no matter how much we love the person who is suffering. A dog on the other hand has no thoughts for itself, only unconditional love and the desire to please. This enables PTSD sufferers to reconnect without feelings of guilt that they are not progressing fast enough and without having to think about others feelings, which can be so difficult when you are suffering mentally and physically.

The more organisations who train dogs to help with the effects of PTSD on war veterans and participate in healing programs, the more data will be collected on the benefits and already states such as Florida in the US, Congress has commissioned a study, to assess the effectiveness of canines helping PTSD sufferers.

We Owe Our Dogs A Lot

The power of a dogs love and companionship can never be underestimated and every time a new ailment, disorder or disability strikes the human race, there seems to be a place for dogs in the healing and helping. As such we owe so much to our canine friends and we need to focus much more on showing them the respect and love that they so willingly give to us.

Just Rambling On Website

Just Rambling On is a fantastic website owned and edited by Mal Firth and featuring his 3 beautiful Border Collies, Brett, Molly and Sam. The site is dedicated to rambling across the West Pennine Moors and other areas in the UK, and Mal provides some amazing blogs and navigations of the journeys and walks taken with his dogs and camera. The site is a must for anyone who loves walking, especially if you want to take your four legged friend along as your companion.

The site also boasts some amazing photographs also taken by Mal and blog posts about his dogs in addition to having helpful links to pet friendly sites and services across the UK such as dog friendly pubs.

One of our affinities with this website are the dog related aspects that both Just Rambling On and The Dog Express have in common. All 3 of Mal’s dogs are Border Collies and given that The Dog Express is based in the heart of Wales, it goes without saying that most of our team have Border Collies of their own (and what an intelligent and wonderful breed they are too!) In addition to this one of Mal’s dogs was rescued from Manchester Dogs Home who are the beneficiary of our ongoing sponsor articles on The Kennel 35 Project and last but not least Mal also supports The Yellow Dog UK who were this weeks ‘Featured Article’. Click to see Mal’s excellent article on ‘Some Dogs Need Space’ which features his dog Brett who is people friendly but not always so keen on other dogs.

Meet The Just Rambling On Dogs

Sam enjoying the snow

The first of the 3 dogs to join Mal was Sam who is a black & white Border Collie who was born in May 2005. Sam came to live with Mal when he was just 9 weeks old.

Brett with his new Yellow Dog bandanna

Brett the brown and white Collie was next to arrive when he was 14 months old and Mal rescued him from Manchester Dogs Home in July 2006 after he had apparently been taken to the dogs home by the police who had found him abandoned and wandering the streets.

Then came Molly the Tri-Colour who was born in December 2010. She joined Mal, Sam and Brett at 12 months old after her owners found that they could no longer keep up with her boundless energy.

It is clear to see from the above that Mal not only loves and appreciates dogs but he has also saved the lives of more than one of his canine companions and has given them the forever home they truly deserve. All four of them spend most days around the meadows, woods and moors and what better life for a Border Collie.

The links and information provided throughout this article are based on the Yellow Dog UK campaign, however you can find your countries own site with a quick Google search.

What is The Yellow Dog Project

The Yellow Dog aims to bring awareness to dogs who may need their space for one reason or another. There are a variety of reasons why a dog needs space, including being in training, healing from an operation or illness, being in season, being nervous or even just having a bad day. The purpose of Yellow Dog is to supply dog owners with a yellow ribbon or bandanna that they can attach to the dog or lead and act as a signal to other dog owners and people not to get to close.

It is not always possible to interact with dog owners whilst they are out walking their dog and so they are not always able to inform other walkers of their dogs temperament. A yellow ribbon or bandanna can be seen at a distance and they aim is that it stands as a universal indicator to give a dog space, with a view to reducing accidents and injury that can be easily avoided with a little warning.

How To Get Involved

The Yellow Dog Project.com site link is provided towards the end of this article and shows which counties already have a Yellow Dog campaign ongoing.

For The Yellow Dog UK, you can send off for your free ribbon (there may be a postage charge or an additional charge for bandanna’s or additional merchandise.) The ribbon can be used for short durations such as when a dog is in heat or recovering from an operation and they may be temperamental or the ribbons can be used for long terms instances where dogs are maybe elderly and not so keen on bouncy puppies.

Become a Yellow Dog Sponsor

Would you like to become a Yellow Dog sponsor?
